My Xmas presents to me

I found this painting of the volcano Ixtaccíhuatl on eBay, for sale by a dealer in London. I'd been daydreaming about finding a nice picture of the volcanoes for my bedroom, and along came this. The technique is so-so, but it IS pretty, and it reminds me. I used to see the volcanoes every day of my childhood.

My second Xmas present to myself was the album "Amigo é casa" by Simone Bittencourt de Oliveira, and it features this beautiful piece by Milton Nascimento.

Here is Simone performing the piece in 1982.
According to the YouTube upload:

"Rede Globo - Especial 'Corpo e Alma'

It's the anniversary of 23F, the 1981 failed putsch in Spain. That, and a conversation I'm having, got me to thinking, after a million years, of a singer who was exiled from Spain when I was a teen.

My first love gave me a love for Joan Manuel Serrat, whose web site can be found through this link.

MEDITERRÁNEO (MEDITERRANEAN)

Music and lyrics by Joan Manuel Serrat
Translation by Coby Lubliner
Translation at UC Berkeley

Quizás porque mi niñez sigue jugando en tu playa,
y escondido tras las cañas
duerme mi primer amor,
llevo tu luz y tu olor
por dondequiera que vaya.
Y amontonado en tu arena
guardo amor, juegos y pena.
Yo,
que en la piel tengo el sabor amargo del llanto eterno
que han vertido en ti cien pueblos
de Algeciras a Estambul,
para que pintes de azul
sus largas noches de invierno.
A fuerza de desventura,
tu alma es profunda y oscura.

A tus atardeceres rojos
se acostumbraron mis ojos
como el recodo al camino.
Soy cantor, soy embustero,

quiero tener buena vista.
Mi cuerpo será camino,
le daré verde a los pinos,
y amarillo a las genistas.
Cerca del mar, porque yo
nací en el Mediterráneo.

Perhaps because on your beaches
my childhood still is playing,
And concealed behind the swaying
Reeds my first love lies asleep,
Your light, your smell I keep
Wherever I may be staying.
And on your sand I’ve been piling
Love and games and pain and smiling.

I
Carry the bitter taste of tears in skin and sinew,
That your cities have poured into you
From Gibraltar to Istanbul,
So you may paint, like blue wool,
Those winter nights that linger.
Your fate has been sad and serious;
Your soul is deep and mysterious.

My eyes have become used
To your red sky at gloaming,
Like the thimble to the tailor.
I sing, I cheat and I gamble,
I like wine, and like a sailor,
My soul wants only to ramble.
I can’t help that I’m a man
Born on the Mediterranean!

And you come and go,
but first kiss my town with laughter.
You play with the tide, and after
Come back as though you repent,
Like a woman, with a scent
Of tar that seems to draft her,
Who inspires love and yearning,
Who is known and feared like burning
Fire!

If death comes for me one night
when I’m asleep on my pillow,
Push my boat into the billow,
Into an autumn east wind,
And let its white wings be pinned
By the tempest, like a willow.
And bury me without mourning
Where beach and sky lie aborning.

Up on a mountainside, rising high
above the horizon,
I want my view to be mellow.
My body will be a crossing,
I’ll give the pines their green mossing,
And the Scotch brooms their bright yellow.
Near the sea, for I’m a man
Born on the Mediterranean.

Guantanamo first order of business

President Obama signed an executive order to ending the CIA's secret overseas prisons, banning coercive interrogation methods and closing the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. It was followed by an order that the US is to observe the Geneva Conventions. Great first move; I'm over the moon about it.

Last Day of W

Break out the champagne! It's the last day of the dark presence that should evermore remain unnamed — except in a war crimes tribunal.

A few good-byes

Mem Shannon

This found by His Fabulousness Mr. Allison

Goodbye.us features good-bye letters to our soon-to-be ex-thug-in-chief. A sampling:
I heard the other day that the sun was about to shine for the first time in eight years. Is it true? Has the rain departed? Can it be? Is there something to look forward and onward to?

...You have acted like a complete and utter fool... Now, be a good little boy and GET THE FUCK OUT!

You are a shameless criminal that has no feelings, a worthless common drunk that should have never been in politics. you are a man with no morality what so ever. you are a convicted drunk driver, death follows you and your family like a black shadow.

You leaving your stolen office is the best thing that happened to this country in eight years.

...all we got was a cocky, self centered, egotistical, unintelligent mini dictator wannabe

Did Satan give you a pat on the back for a job well done?

Don't let the door hit you in the ass!

My own good-bye to the dark presence
My own sentiments are best expressed by Paquita la del Barrio, a ranchero singer from my homeland in her brilliant rendition of Two-legged Rat. (I've done a so-so translation for all my English-speaking friends.)

Two-legged rat
Filthy rat! Crawling beast! Rubbish! Monstrosity!
Subhuman specter of hell! Damned insect! How you have hurt me!
Vermin! Poisonous snake! Rubbish! I hate you and despise you!
Two-legged rat! I'm talking to you!
Because even crawling vermin, compared to you are very small.
Damn leach! Damn cockroach!
You spread infection wherever you bite, you wound and you kill!
Vermin! Poisonous snake! Rubbish! I hate you and despise you!
Two-legged rat! I'm talking to you!
Because a crawling piece of vermin, even the most damnable,
compared to you is very small.
Are you listening you useless hyena from hell?
How I hate and despise you!

Hit the Road Jack
by the incomparable Ray Charles

Thank you, Mr. Bush, for making me feel like a war criminal. Thank you for ruining the global economy. Thank you...

One year in two minutes

Found on YouTube, this video was made by Eirik Solheim with "[i]mages from the same spot through one year with audio recorded from the same location."

It's lovely, isn't it?

Feet

Was contemplating my feet shod in my favorite red shoes the other day and marveled at the intricacy and delicacy of the small bones. So... here's a little something by Pablo Neruda. It's not really about feet, but it's so lovely. I will try to find an appropriate ode to feet though.

Your Feet
When I cannot look at your face
I look at your feet.
Your feet of arched bone,
your hard little feet.
I know that they support you,
and that your sweet weight
rises upon them.
Your waist and your breasts,
the doubled purple
of your nipples,
the sockets of your eyes
that have just flown away,
your wide fruit mouth,
your red tresses,
my little tower.
But I love your feet
only because they walked
upon the earth and upon
the wind and upon the waters,
until they found me
— Pablo Neruda.

The Eleventh Commandment

Thou shall love one another as much
as I love you and in the same way —
spiritually as well as physically and intellectually.

I shall not forget that thou are beautifully and powerfully made.

The compliment that made my year

An acquaintance of mine in San Diego emailed me to say that Catherine Deneuve in "A Christmas Tale" physically reminded him of me. (He made a point to write that her character was not attractive emotionally and that was not what he saw.)

Wow! Well, I looked on IMDB and, modesty way aside, I have to say that, in some of the stills, Mme. Deneuve and I do look quite alike. Of course I cannot match her beauty, but the style, dress and even hairdos are similar. I asked I., he looked at the stills below and, startled, said this is spot on.

Thank you, P., for a compliment that will carry me through every time I am having a tough day. Regardez, s'il vous plaît.

Birthday outing

Well, what a birthday!

L. flew in for the day: we went to see The Colbert Report (the day's show and a preview of his Christmas special). After that, we went to Bar Boulud.

Menu

white wine

pâté grand-père
coarse country pâté
foie gras, truffle juice and port

chocolat noisette
paillete feuilletine, chocolate foam
chocolate-vanilla ice cream

I got home to beautiful gifts from I. He gave me a bouquet of lilies and an iPod. Very extravagant!

I have been spoiled to pieces! What a lucky woman I am.

At the beach

I adore the feeling of my sinking my feet into cold seawater.

WATER

Everything on the earth bristled, the bramble
pricked and the green thread
nibbled away, the petal fell, falling
until the only flower was the falling itself.
Water is another matter,
has no direction but its own bright grace,
runs through all imaginable colors,
takes limpid lessons
from stone,
and in those functionings plays out
the unrealized ambitions of the foam.

SG - A very good person

I took a chance today and called a former boyfriend to ask him for advice in speaking to one of my doctors. In truth, I did not expect anything more than the most perfunctory of answers; instead, this gentleman (and he is, in every sense of the word), offered to look at my records and call my doctor himself.

He was very nice when I knew him a million years ago and is very, very decent today.

I was glad to learn that he is now happily married, with a stepson, and my hope is that his life is a good one.

After our break-up years ago, I spent many months just being thankful for the many good things he represented and brought into my life. Knowing him was one of the great privileges of my life. Now I have more reason for gratitude.

B. - A beautiful memory

I remember you with gratitude and awe for you became the light in the dark passage of my life

Now, on the other hand, your abrupt departure from my life left a hole in my heart.

Why did you give no hint that night
That quickly after the morrow's dawn,
And calmly, as if indifferent quite,
You would close your term here, up and be gone
Where I could not follow
With wing of swallow
To gain one glimpse of you ever anon!

Never to bid good-bye
Or lip me the softest call,
Or utter a wish for a word, while I
Saw morning harden upon the wall,
Unmoved, unknowing
That your great going
Had place that moment, and altered all.

Why do you make me leave the house
And think for a breath it is you I see
At the end of the alley of bending boughs
Where so often at dusk you used to be;
Till in darkening dankness
The yawning blankness
Of the perspective sickens me!

You were she who abode
By those red-veined rocks far West,
You were the swan-necked one who rode
Along the beetling Beeny Crest,
And, reining nigh me,
Would muse and eye me,
While Life unrolled us its very best.

Why, then, latterly did we not speak,
Did we not think of those days long dead,
And ere your vanishing strive to seek
That time's renewal? We might have said,
"In this bright spring weather
We'll visit together
Those places that once we visited."

Well, well! All's past amend,
Unchangeable. It must go.
I seem but a dead man held on end
To sink down soon. . . . O you could not know
That such swift fleeing
No soul foreseeing--
Not even I--would undo me so!

WTC Responder Day

Yesterday was a great gift to 9/11 Responders: we were feted and our accomplishments recognized on a day assigned to celebrate us.

I ran into friends, met some important advocates (one, Suzanne Mattei, for the first time), and painted part of a mural by responders for responders.

Some of the participants:

Relief for WTC responders

Like so many responders to the WTC attacks, my health was severely compromised by toxins — toxins that the then-chief of the Environmental Protection Agency, Christine Whitman, denied were present.

The biggest gift I have received has been the care of the medical team and various psychotherapists.

My medical team is based at Bellevue Hospital's WTC clinic. With their help, my health has improved enormously. God bless them all, particularly my nurse, Olga Cernadas.

Three truly gifted and compassionate psychotherapists have supported me in more ways than I ever expected; they are Marcela Hoffer of the now-defunct Columbia University Resiliency Program, Sapana Patel of the
Center for Trauma at Columbia University and the NYS Psychiatric Institute, and Pastor Martha Jacobi of the faith-based mental health program Faithful Response.

I wish I had photos of the medical and psychotherapy providers who have enhanced my well being, but the only ones I do have are of Sapana Patel , currently an assistant professor at Columbia University and a fellow at the NYS Psychiatric Institute, Pastor Martha Jacobi, a Lutheran minister whose service includes EMDR psychotherapy for WTC responders.
